First of all there are over 1000 species of Euglena. A few of them contain bright green chloroplasts which means they obtain ATP via photosynthisis. However, some species are colorless and can absorb nutrients from decayed organic material through catabolism.

Isn't that the critter that surrounds it's meal then absorbs it thru it's skin/outer layer?
