If it happened while you were surfing the net, most likely it was initiated by a virus that you picked up on "popular" sites.

If it happened while you were playing a game, it could be due to overheating or unstable power supply.

If it happened while you were just doing office apps, mp3 or DVD movies, it could be due to unstable power supply or RAM problem.

Two things jump to mind: Either your computer is overheating or you have a virus. Overheating usually is caused when one of the fans in your computer stops working, they are usually pretty easy to replace, most fans only need to be plugged in. if its a virus use anti-virus software.

probably overheating, clean out all the dust with vacuum and compressed air
