I was thinking about getting a fish. I would like a fish that doesn't take too much care, can live in a bowl or tank, and, isn't too big. I was thinking about:

Black Molly

Fancy Goldfish

Tiger Barb Tettras

Which one do you think would be best for me? Thanks, and, 10 POINTS to whoever has the best answer! Thanks again,

~ KBTL!

don't put any of those in a bowl! they need their space. and if your thinking about getting a goldfish just remember they can live for decades! mollys need at least a 20 gallon tank and tiger barbs 10.
good luck =)

As far as I know, none of those are meant for a bowl. Maybe a goldfish, but they are very dirty and they raise the ammonia levels quickly so you'd be changing the water a lot and you said you didn't want to do that.

A male betta would be perfect for a bowl because they require very little care and they don't mess their water up nearly as fast as other fish. They only live to maybe a year and a half to 2 years on average although I've got one now that's almost 3. They also can get air from the surface of the water so they don't even need a pump. If you can though, I'd get one of those little 2 or 3 gallon tanks with a light so you can see the fish better. I put a snail in with mine so he could have his own pet. Naturally, I named the snail Gary since I've been exposed to many years of Spongebob....

None of the fish listed are suitable for a bowl.

Goldfish will get to around 5-12 inches (and these are the fancies, commons will be even larger) so you will need at least a 20 gallon tank for one, and add another 10 gallons for each additional goldfish. The one advantage they have over the others is that they don't require a heater, but they don't like their water to get too warm either.

Tiger barbs are a schooling fish, so you should have them in a group of 6 or more - otherwise, the few you have will bite the fins and harrass the others in the tank. This leads to stress, possibly infections and death. For a group of 6, you should have at least a 20 gallon tank (a 20 long would be preferable to a 20 high here).

Mollies can be kept by themselves or as a group. If in a group of males and females, they'll produce lots of fry. Males will be more aggressive/territorial with each other than females, but unless you want to have lots of fry (or have to find homes for them) keeping a tank of a single gender would be the way to go. Females can store sperm from males for up to 6 months, and give birth to fry about every 28 days during that time, so just buying females isn't a guarantee of not getting fry. There are different types of mollies from a 6 inch sailfin to a 2-3 inch balloon, so it's harder to give a tank size without knowing which type you might get. Mollies may run a little more in costs, because they like to have a little salt in their water (about a tablespoon for every 5 gallons of tank water). You can use aquarium salt from a pet store (more expensive) or get kosher, canning, pickling, or rock salt, or table salt without iodine or anti-caking powder added at the grocery store (which tends to be less expensive). A 20 gallon would be a good size for these as well.

You can get more info on these (and some other types of fish) in the link below:

hmm.. well the Black Mollys are small, and decently easy to take care of. The Fancy Goldfish usually differ in care-requirements. As for the Tiger Barb's they rate a ways below the Black Mollys. The difference; Black Mollys are very aggressive.. Where Fancy Goldfish and Tiger Barb's aren't so much. Overall i would have to vote for the Tiger Barbs;

1) They're very small.
2) Not much care required.
3) Very pretty to look at.
4) Pretty active if 2+ in the tank together.
5) Don't need much space.
The negatives..

1) A little nippy if 2+ in the tank together
2) Need a variety of toys to play with
3) Get stressed easily (if moved to a different tank/bowl or if their water is tampered with)

If you do go with the TB Tetra's, I would suggest getting a 1+ gallon tank, even though they can do OK with less. (I would suggest 1 gal. per TB Tetra)

Best Wishes!

EDIT *** YOu're probably wondering why I don't think the other fish;

The goldfish require 5 gal.'s per fish and get quite large! They also tend to overeat, and mess alot, which results in frequent tank-cleaning required.
Black Mollys' also tend to overeat, and mess a lot, however Black Mollys' also and don't do well with other Black Mollys'. They also breed alot!! So you if you get male&female you will end up having alot of babies!

Out of your list, i think you should choose the tiger barbs. They are the hardiest of the lot, but may prove a little aggressive to other types of fish (they LOVE to nip at other fishes' fins)

Goldfish are delicate and are prone to overfeeding (which most new people do) and poor water quality

Mollies are good, but they need a SMALL quantity of salt in their tanks.

I can also recommend you a few other fish: guppies and fighting fish (aggressive, keep in a small tank or a big jar). The fighting fish is the hardiest of the lot, but they have a relatively short lifespan compared to other fish....

Goldfish is the best for you. But it depends on what you want, either a tank or bowl. Tropical fish including black molly and tiger barbs require air filtration, costant temperature, weekly 1/4 tank water change, may need to scrub algea off the tank glass, and monitor PH levels in the water. Goldfish don't require much, a bowl, day old room temperature water, and a fish pump if you desire. Cleaning is fast and easy compared to a tank.

K, i have had goldfish, black mollys and tettras.
The tettras are kinda hard to take care of,
Goldfish poop alot, and you need to make sure you have a really good filter,
Mollys are the easiest just make sure you have a little bit of rock salt in the tank, and that it is be tween 78-80 degrees, I also have worked with fish stores.

Goldfish are very easy to take care of. No air or filter needed either. Black mollies are a bit harder and need to live in brackish water. Also prone to diseases. You would need air and a filter system for mollies. My 10 year old son has a Betta in a bowl. Has had him for two years. Very pretty and easy to take care of. Does not need air or a filter system either. Just change the water weekly and feed every other day or so.

Goldfish are great! They last a long time (mine lasted 4 years, in good care) and are not picky at all. Don't get a siamese fighting fish unless you really want to (they are very picky and die quickly). If you are laidback yet fun.... a goldfish is truely the answer. Lives in small round bowl, cheap food, not much care required besides cleaning bowl twice a month and feeding once a day. Good luck in finding a fish! Bye!
