my lactation consultant mentioned to me that infant formula contains both soil fungus and cocaine. no joke. now, i have to admit that i find that "fact" a little hard to believe. i didn't call her on it - i simply didn't want to get into a debate with a delusional fanatic, which is what i assumed her to be.
my question: does anyone know if there is anything out there to actually support this statement in the least? i hate the thought that this person is spouting things like this when she has the ear of many new parents (she is a lactating consultant thru our local WIC program and the University of MIchigan), some of whom may be a bit more gullible than average, thus they may believe her and be too scared to switch to bottles if the situation calls for it.
this question is NOT about opening the whole breastfeeding vs. bottle-feeding argument. i'm looking for facts to go to a higher authority with, so please don't turn this into "who cares more for their baby." thanks!

lol, my daughter is 3 now and was nursed until she was over a year old because it was the right choice for me, not because this lady scared me into it. this was in a conversation i was having with her recently when i ran into her.

I would report her. Seriously, coke has not been used in any food products since the conception of Coca Cola, and is illegal. How would they get it in the formula? Did it come from Afghanistan where they grow the poppies? This lady is a whack job and needs to be not only told so, but reprimanded by her superiors. Call the county.

She must be talking about the contaminated formula in China, which has absolutely NOTHING to do with US formula as it's not sold here. I've been giving my son PC formula since he was around 2 months old. He's now about 6 and a half months old and has never been sick, not even with a cold. You're fine and so is your baby girl!

She's right, at least in part.
Everyone has read about how the formula companies are making formulas now with DHA and ARA. Guess where they are getting that DHA and ARA, hint: it's not from mother's milk.
SOME companies are growing fungus, extracting the DHA and adding it to formula. Not all formula companies do this, but it is a way to extract some DHA.
As far as cocaine, it's not added to formula, but there have been plenty of cases of smugglers using formula cans to smuggle drugs. Also, some drug dealers will cut cocaine and heroin with powdered baby formula.

I think sometimes there's formula in coke, but I doubt vice versa...
A rather confused "consultant."
"The amount of infant formula stolen from store shelves only to end up back on different store shelves is increasing.
Pediatricians should be informing new mothers about this situation, formula manufacturers told this newspaper.
Infant formula is shoplifted and used to cut heroin and cocaine, but at $12 or more a can and $70 or more a case, it is also valuable in its own right. Thieves have taken notice.
For the most part, there may be little serious risk for infants..."

She is twisting facts to encourage breastfeeding :)
ARA and DHA (synthetic fatty acids) in infant formula are made from algae and fungus. This is ok, it is done in a laboratory and honestly a lot of things we use and eat are derived from things that sound gross. You should look into what goes into baby vaccines! way worse! but i'll bet she wouldn't recommend against those :/
And cocaine? I have never heard of anything like that, it is a regulated product, so there couldn't be cocaine in it; i don't know what she is talking about.
Breastfeeding is best, but formula can be lifesaving, and there is nothing dangerous about it.

The ingredients that go into infant formula are regulated by the government, that is why the generic formula is just as good as the name brand. the government would not allow fungus or coke in the formula. Now there are some chinese formulas that are not regulated by the government infact the government recomends that you not buy the chinese formulas. and if she is sprotting this off you need to let someone know at the wic office that she is saying this as well as ask that she provide you some lititure(spelling I know) on her saying this....My goodeness I feed my little one formula and he has done GREAT!!!!! ahead in his class..

I think you need to find a new lactation consultant!!!And i would talk to the person who prints out your checks about it.They shouldnt be saying stuff like that because its not true. Some women are really against formula feedings and can try and scare women away from it.I hae breast and formula fed both of my girls. If there was cocaine in it ,it would be illegal.

I know infant formulas contain aluminum and silicone, and many contain MSG.
Soil fungus is probable in soy formula as it isn't like veggies are ever completely clean.
Cocaine is used in certain medications however I don't believe it is in formula (except that certain drug dealers have smuggled cocaine in formula containers, but thats a whole other issue).
I have also heard that formula contains pig kidneys, I don't know if that is true. I have heard of meat based formulas as an alternative but I have no idea what is in them.
Here is my source for the silicone, MSG, etc:

(Sorry I had to ncane it, yahoo answers has blocked the findarticles site again. You can google "known contaminants of infant formula" and it will come up)

Haha... hm... Sounds to me like she was trying to scare you into nursing!
That's just ridiculous. There are no such ingredients in infant formula. If there were, then the public would be uninformed, and there would be no more formula.
If cocaine WERE in formula, then our babies would not ever get to sleep at night.
This is misinformation, if not malpractice???
Take her out! That is WRONG of her.
Ugh... those pro-breast people can be SO crazy. And misinformed.
Good luck to you!

I would write that lactation 'expert' off as a wing-nut. If she's making claims like that to people, you don't need contrasting information to report her to her higher ups. They should be told about this.
Addition: This woman should not be allowed to use scare tactics to encourage breastfeeding.
As 'megviolet' noted below, she is twisting facts. Anyone who is extremely anti-whatever will find ways to discredit their target. It's done in politics, in advertising, everywhere.
