I think the curfew should be set according to the activity. For example if they are going to the movies figure out how long the movie last and add a little extra time and let that be the curfew. Teens can get into trouble if there is too much idol time on their hands, So set the curfew according to the activity.

The person who said by dark scares me a bit. Lol. I grew up that way and yeah.. I had no life and no real boyfriend until I was 18, go figure. I think an appropriate time is 9-10 on weekdays... and 10-11 on weekends... depending on sporting activities or so that they have. Also, talk to them about it, see what they suggest is fair.. and help them come up with consequences... for instance, if they're grades drop a letter grade or more, they have to take two hours off their curfew for the rest of the grading semester, or more if they're grades do not improve. Something of that sort. You know the area you live in, and how responsible your child is more than we do, so do what is best for the both of you. Good luck!

You didn't give me much info to go on, but as a parent of a 14-year-old, I'll give you some general guidelines that I would use in determining it. For a good kid who had given me no reason not to trust him/her, I would say 9-10 on school nights and 11-12 on weekends. The range I put in there would depend on how safe the neighborhood is and what the plans were. I would expect to be informed of the plans and possibly to be kept in touch with by cell phone to make sure of safe arrival at destination, etc. I would expect some level of adult supervision depending on where the teen was going, and would want to know what other kids were there. My daughter isn't allowed to date at this age, but may meet and hang with a mixed group of friends as long as there are at least a couple more girls with her at all times.
I have given some flexibility on the curfew time if the event warranted--an out of town school sports event, etc.
For me, the details are more important than a rigid time. If I know where my kids are going and who they are with and how long that is expected to last, I feel better than if they are just aimlessly cruising or hanging out until a specified time.
If curfew is broken, or if I find out that they were not truthful about where they were or what they were doing, of course I would limit them further next time. I heard a good idea once on breaking curfew--for every minute they are late, that's how many minutes earlier they have to be home the next time they go somewhere.
Hope that makes sense!

On weeknights unless you are out with your parents you should be in by dark. Weekends 10pm. Unless you are out with friends accompanied by an adult then later is fine if your parents agree.
Don't try to grow up too fast. Enjoy your childhood. You don't have many yrs left of it.
