I my self like Plakat tailed betta's that are two or tri colored like this: http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwbettaswt&1192632782 or this http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwbettaswt&1192623285 . The Female's tend to be "duller" in color and some might say there fins are not as free flowing and as long. But what ever you choose, Get what you like and what you can handle. Also when they make bubble nest's, It means they are happy.

If you have a filter for your betta's tank - which you should - there will probably be at least a little surface agitation which will remove all bubble nests. That way, your betta benefits from cleaner water and you don't have to see the nests which you find unappealing.
Male bettas are usually more widely available and, I find, more attractive. Females are now bred with bright colours as well but they don't have the long, flowing fins that males do. There are different tail types for males - halfmoon, crowntail, veiltail and superdelta. I find halfmoons and crowntails to be the most attractive, but usually only veiltails and crowntails can be found in pet stores. You can see a list of the different tail types here, with pictures:

And no, your betta would prefer to have some plants in the bowl. They provide a resting place for him as well as a hiding spot when he needs his own privacy. Plastic plants can sometimes shred their fins, so look for live or fabric plants.

Bettas should have rocks & plants in their home. Males are more colorful, which makes them more appealing to the eye. Yes, they sometimes make bubble nests, but how is that disgusting? It's just bubbles!

The bubble nest is actually pretty. It's very unnoticable. It's just a small grouping of very small bubbles at the top of the tank. GET A MALE. Females are smaller and have really short fins. They are not too attractive. Males have long flowing fins and are beautiful and relaxing to watch. Crowntails are the prettiest in my opinion. Bettas NEED plants and rocks! if they can't hide, then they will scratch all their scales and die! Mine almost did that when we only had some plants and gravel in there. we had to get a hidey thing for him before he died!

The normal betta's can be very pretty and wide range of colors, the crowntail bettas have beautiful designs in there fins almost a derated look but they have a crazy temperment they freak out very easily i had bought a crowntail and paid a fortune for him and i got him home and he went to the top and freaked out and came smashing into the rocks and killed himself. i had never had a normal betta do that. the females are gorgeous i prefer females but they arent for show they have small fins but sometimes very pretty colors even metallic. you really should have something in the tank for him otherwise he wont live very long because he will get bored and depressed.

Well males are much more easy to get a hold of and are generally more colorful. Look around at the selection they have when you get to the store. You also might want to check out this site for some helpful tips.

Regardless of what type you get, make sure he is healthy. The tell-tail signs of a healthy Betta fish are raised fins that aren't shriveled looking. Also, make sure he looks alert and isn't just sitting at the bottom. A good fish store will let you watch him eat to make sure he is healthy.

I think you should get a bowl and put green pebbles at the bottom with a decorative snail. Also get a male.
