Well, first of all, the conflict isn't between India and Kashmir. It's between India and Pakistan. It just takes place in Kashmir.

For about a century, up until 1947, the whole region was under the control of the British (look up British Raj). In 1947, the British partitioned the areas based largely on the major religions of each district. Pakistan, which is almost entirely Muslim, was created at that time from northern India, which is mostly Hindu and Buddhist. Kashmir, which has a mixture of all three (but a large majority of Muslims), became disputed territory under the control of India, Pakistan and China.

Ever since the partition, India and Pakistan have fought each other over the territory, with Kashmiri loyalists fighting for each side. The two countries (China has largely kept to itself) have fought 4 wars over control of Kashmir since 1947.

The impact now is that India is the world's largest democracy, and should thus be an ally of the USA. Because of the War on Terror, our ally is actually Pakistan, but we don't really want to get into the middle of this.

The impact for the future is that both Pakistan and India posses nuclear weapons, and only faith in the ultimate rationality of humans lets us hope they won't use them.

When India and Pakistan achieved independence in 1947 the British Administration divided up colonial India detween the two new states and Kashmir was given to India.
Pakistan has claimed it ever since on the grounds that it was historically Muslim.
As usual it is about religion.

Cashmire is a type of wool.

Kashmir is a region in Northern India. It's a buffer area between India and Pakistan and they both say it's theirs.

I sense a term paper though, so I'll say get thee to Wiokipedia.

There is a border problem with this area. Pakistan would like it and it has many Muslims.
