The first two answers are excellent. A few additions. First, while war was never exactly the noble and heroic activity it was made out to be, WWI brought this home in a big way to the average person. Almost no one in Britain or Germany did not lose a loved one. Almost an entire generation was lost. The romanticism of fighting for a noble cause was dealt a blow from which it has (thankfully) never recovered. The war itself was so horrible that it was worse than almost any consequence that would have come from not fighting it. It's been said that WWI is when the 20th century, the bloodiest century in history, really began. And as one writer said, the unneccesary punitive measures taken against Germany made WWII all but inevitable.

Germany was harshly punished by the Treaty of Versailles which caused some resentment among the Germans (which was one of the major causes for world war 2). The conditions of the treaty were as follows:

- Germany lost significant amounts of land to other countries
- Arms limitations were enforced (germany couldn't have a large army)
- Reparations (Germany was asked to pay back the war costs of opposistion countries)
- Guilt (Germany was blamed for the whole war - which is not exactly true)
- League of Nations was formed (the old version of the United Nations today)
- Austria and Germany were not allowed to form alliances (they were the major nations involved in WW1)

Hope that helped!

World War I effectively ended monarchic rule throughout Europe. Nations who were formerly ruled by Kings saw themselves now under democratic governments. Large empires like Austria Hungary and the Ottoman Empires were dissolved and it came to form a map of Europe that we recognize more today.

What is more, the rule of Russia by Czars was replaced - briefly by democratic rule, and then the creation of the first Communist regime in the history of the world. That led to huge changes in Eastern Europe and Asia.

Finally, World War I saw the rise of the United States as a recognized world power in military and economic terms. The U.S. now becomes a world power capable of powerful intervention in the world. However, it also led to a strong pull toward isolationism. It also saw a time in which Germans were discriminated against in the U.S., as they came to be blamed universally for World War I.
