A little influenced by the fact that "Rabit Fighter" is playing as I type this my first answer will be Marc Bolan. He has a great unique voice, not crazy and abrasive or extremely sweet and smooth, but great nonetheless and all his own. I like the wispy feel it has to it.

Although I could also go on about Joey Ramone (or anything else even remotely Ramones related) all day. Not nearly a conventional vocalist, but he gets the job done and it fits so perfectly. Could anyone else have sung "Rockaway Beach" nearly as effectively? No. He always sounds sincere, and there's nothing I appreciate more than sincereity. A singer could have the most horrible garbled vocals on the face of the planet (Darby Crash?) and you can tell if it's sincere and it completely makes up for it (Darby Crash).

Honorable mention to: David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Roky Erickson.

And of course Elvis Presley.

And if this is too long it's your fault for leaving the question so open, in fact you're lucky I don't tell you everthing I love about Lou Reed right now. I'll save it for another day though, bed time.
