Things in his life.
Like a square for when he was born or where. A square for when he started school. A sqaure for sibs. A square for pets. A square for hobbies. A square for sports he's in or likes...and so on.

I once started a "Crazy about Christmas" crazy quilt using pieces of Christmas-themed material. I still have part of the unfinished quilt top and a lot of the cotton scraps. I'll probably never get back to it as I'm getting arthritis in my hands.

If you're making a really good quilt, I'd just do it in his favorite colors so he can keep it for years and years without growing tired of the theme.

I agree, I would try not to do something too childish so that he does not grow out of it. Maybe some camo fabrics or western if he likes that sort of thing. I would do a pretty plain pattern, nothing like the Grandmas Flower Garden or a Friendship Ring.

Cars are fun and there are lots of good fabrics - or animals, or even sports.

How about sports? Animals? Whatever he enjoys and likes and will also go with his room.
