If I withdraw from a course and get a "W", even though it does not affect my G.P.A., would you say it looks very bad on my transcript?

I switched my major and dropped two classes that are not required for this major. One, a foreign language, was a complete elective and was not required for my old major either, nor required as a general course for the school of Arts & Sciences that I am in... I did fall below full-time standing for this semester, but this does not affect me financially.

I've only dropped one other course before, and that was when I was taking 21 credits (so I dropped down to 18).

A "W" is a non-grade. It doesn't matter. Nobody cares unless you have a lot of them and have financial aid paying for dropped classes.

A "W" looks a lot better than a C, D, or F. With a "W" there could be any number of valid reasons you left the class. It could be that you just didn't like the professor. It could be that you were in an overload schedule and needed to reduce some. It could be that the class time conflicted with your job (or even another class). It could be that there were family issues that required your time. Or, as many worry, it could be that you just couldn't do the work. Unless you make excuses for it, nobody will ever care why you dropped the class. What they will care about is why you didn't drop a class you ultimately got a D or F in. That looks really bad. The question will be "Didn't you know you were failing? Why didn't you drop it?" and they will think you not so bright.

Now, a couple "W" grades every semester? That starts looking like you can't finish a task you start.

It depends on your school and how they handle the process of dropping a class. It doesn't look too bad, but avoid doing it because then it will bring your transcript down and make you look like a slacker (not that you are)

1 or 2 W's are ok, just try not to go above that

It depends on what week you are in. If you get a WP it means you withdrew with a passing grade. If you get a WF it means you withdrew and you were failing the class. This does not look good on your GPA. If you get just a W it does not look bad for your GPA. However if you are under a grant it will put you on academic probation. This mean you will have to pay for the class before you can apply for another grant.

compared to an A it doesn't look good. compared to the F that you would get if you did not withdrawl...not so bad. Actually, there are many reasons people have to withdrawl from a class of classes, not are for "bad" reasons. but trust me when i say...W's beat the HECK out of F's

You don't want to collect them. But one or two with a reasonable explanation should be ok.
