It all depends on the material you're trying to bond. There are hundreds of kinds of glue, epoxy's, urothanes, wood glue, plastic glue, hot glue, on and on...
The website I listed above is great, you select what you're trying to glue, and it will suggest the best glue.
Glue is not just glue.
My favorite is epoxy, JB Weld is the shot!

No you don't, actually any white water based glue will work more or less the same. Elmers is slightly thinner than others - it has more water - so will take longer to dry and may not hold as well, depending on what you want to glue together.
You would be better off reading the labels on the bottles to see what they say they do best.
When I can find it I like to get Sobo Glue for Fabrics, when I'm working with fabrics, but Tacky Glue, Tackier Than Tacky and Aleene's (just to name a few that are available) will work just fine too, it's really personal preference.
I'd suggest you buy a small bottle of one try it and if you don't care for that one, try another brand next time and so on till you've found the brand you like best.

No, you don't. Most any of the white glues out there now will do the trick, and most of them are less expensive than Elmer's.
Wanna hear a funny story? I used to have an Uncle Elmer. He was the sweetest man, and I loved him to pieces. He's been gone for many years now, and I still miss him. My family always referred to the glue as "Uncle Elmer's Glue". One day my mother went to the store and needed to buy some, but couldn't find it. So she found a clerk, and without thinking asked if they had any "Uncle Elmer's Glue". The clerk gave her a very funny look, and my mother had to do some quick explaining as to why she called it that!

Elmers glue is just a brand of glue. Any white glue will work, and depending what you are making tacky glue may work better.

You don't have to, but I always tend to buy Elmer's. Real cheap glue doesn't always work like I need it to.
