It is necessary for anybody to put boundaries on behavior, be it a child or an adult. Some children seem to run riot, but there are many who are being raised correctly. It is just that news is always about the negative; do you realize there are movie stars who do not drink, drive and end up in an expensive recovery place? We hear only the worst.
Some parents are still children, immature in their choices and not ready to parent. They still need parenting, so to expect them to parent wisely is beyond their abilities. Doesn't make it right, just makes it more important that we all grow up before marrying and having children. Babies raising babies makes for problems not just for the parents and babies, but for we who have to be around the consequences.
Everybody wants boundaries; aren't we lucky to have lanes on roads to keep everybody doing the right thing...driving wisely. So it is with children; set those boundaries. They may not like you but that isn't what parenting is about. Friendship is with others, not your children.

It is not just ok, but required. What if a toddler was going to run into the street or touch a hot stove?

they have to. how else will they learn. I know what you mean see it all the time and it seems like the child is the boss and always get their way. we need to take control here and not raise a bunch of spoiled brats who think they know it all.

Not only should parents say "NO", they should feel no guilt about smacking their kids' backside once in a while.

its a parents job to teach them that they wont always get what they want. alot of parents dont do it cuz they want to "be their friend". they dont realize they are harming the kid.
