Are there any drawbacks that you have personally experienced with non-Sony memory cards? I was just shopping on ebay and they had quite a range in prices, but the non-Sony ones were always the "best" price & new ones were even cheaper than used Sony cards. What gives?

I bought a used PS2 off ebay for $60 (came with 3 games worth that much), but money is tight in my household right now, so I wondered if paying more for a Sony memory card is really worth it.

Technically, they shouldn't be as reliable, but in reality I think they are just as reliable as any other.
I did this for ps1 and never had any problems.

I am hesitant to by any memory card except the Sony brand ones because I had problems with a 3rd party (meaning NOT Sony) memory card on my PS1. It caused many of my game saves to become corrupted, and this happened to other people I know. I'm not sure if this problem occurs with the PS2, but I don't want to take the chance. I had close to 100 hours logged on FFVII, and lost it all due to a corrupted save.

I had a ps1 card that wasn't sony when I first got my ps2 way back when they first came out and it wouldn't work on it. Had to buy a sony card and transfer everything with my ps1.
But I imagine that if there is a company out there making cards they will work for at least which ever versions are current up to the time they were designed. When a new revision comes out (newer model) I'm willing to bet Sony would have added them to whatever internal hardware blacklist the PS2 has.

They're probably more expensive because they were made especially made for the PS2, the other ones should work the same way. There is really no difference.

i mean, non-sony stuff works with the ps2, but, if it does screw your system up your system up you're s.o.l cause your warranty only covers your ps2 interacting with sony stuff. i know its cheaper, but id go with sony products only.
