Contrary to an above opinion, the free version of Avast certainly does have real time protection...what good would an on-demand only AV be???

This is why you are advised not to have two *on-access* anti-viri on your machine at the same time...real time protection by both products = real time conflicts between the two. Think about it.

And of course you can set it to update automatically OR manually ("force" an update.) I know she doesn't respect freeware and advises people to buy everything, but come-on now....that's some totally wrong info she's handing out about the free Avast.

The virus definitions are what the scanner uses to recognize the latest viruses and other malware... you usually have to set up your program once to automatically update and they will downoad and install themselves...

If you are using freeware then you do not have this luxury
freeware also does not scan in real time and scans must be kicked off manually instead of watching all files as they open and close

If you have purchased this software then you can go into the preferences and set it up for automatic updates AND there will be a button you can click to force an update.

I always recommend purchasing a security suite (a/v, fw, antispyware.. the whole shabang) from a reliable vendor (like mcafee), properly configuring it and ensuring it is automatically updating.

Good Luck

This is one of the reason why I wouldnt use Trend on our customers machines, the message is stupid, as 90% of users havent a clue how to, so whats the point of finding it yet expect the end users to manually remove it ?

Download Avast and set to scan on next restart, this should take care of them for you

Download Avast anitvirus at download.com, it's free, and the best antivirus available.
