You seem to be asking about delicates. If so Woolite works best or something similar. But it's still hard to keep things like new no matter what. For regular cottons and similar fabrics most liquid detergents will do the job. I use Tide liquid and it is offered in fragrance free. Your washer will also make a difference. Newer washers have so many settings that are better for your clothes so if you have an older model you may want to upgrade. Newer dryers also also so many options to spare your clothes additional heat they don't need.

I use woolite or tide on my clothes, but also use a slow washing cycle. I found that the normal setting was a little harsh on my clothing and broke the fibers down faster. they would also get all twisted and weird too. Now, I use the perm press setting and a slow cycle, with a prewash setting that soaks the clothes in the detergant prior to washing.

I also found that when I got a different and better washer, it made a much dramatic difference on my clothing. I have a pair of black jeans that still look brand new after 5 years.

liquid detergent are less abrasive. pick one without fragrance. Additive of granular water softener (I use Calgon) helps clean clothes & can use less detergent. Wash freshening up clothes on a low wash cycle.
