I recently bought a blanket for my bed and noticed when I got home the package said "do not use fabric softener" but doesn't say why not, I don't use fabric softener anyway but was wondering why it might harm the blanket.

The fibers in some blankets have a strange reaction to fabric softener. It may make the blanket very limp because the fibers are weakened. The blanket will begin to look old and lose its shape.

Sometimes the fabric softener will react with the coloring in the cloth, and you will find yellow streaks where the color has faded, even after the first wash.
Sometimes if you want to use it anyway , you can try setting the color, it may or may not work.

Fabric softener has chemicals in it that can destroy certain fabrics and fabric blends. If it is recommended not to use then don't. I don't use fabric softeners on towels or even sheets. They tend to interact with natural fibers at times to destroy their use or feel.
