I can do better myself with a bucket of soapy water and some old towels than what I've seen from "professionals". Neither of the two I hired were happy with me when I made them go over an area again.
Suggest she might consider SpotShot. It's pretty amazing stuff.

A quality carpet cleaning company is definitely worth it.
When calling around for prices, a few questions to ask are:
1. Are your technicians IICRC certified in carpet cleaning?
2. For Room Pricing, how many Square Feet are in a Room?
3. Do you use a Truck-Mounted System?
4. If the spots come out, how much extra is ScotchGard?
Calling to have a professional look at it before anything is tried on it is the best way, as any work done on it incorrectly could set the spot, turning it into a stain.
As for anything I've not answered sufficiently, just take a look at Rob's answer and you've got what you need to know.

I've owned a carpet cleaning business.
I've tried many different approaches to it.
The best thing I have ever used is Powder Oxy clean and hot water in a carpet extractor. If you try this though. Make absolutely sure you mix the Oxy clean completely before using and then run some clean water through the machine when you are done because I'm not sure if it would hurt the pump or not if you don't rinse it but I never had any problems as long as I rinsed it when I was done.

Yes it is worth it. Stanley Steemer is the most known and does a very good job. They will move your furniture, put down little covers so the woods don't bleed onto the carpet until it dries, and handle difficult spots. I will say that old untreated spots that have been left might be a problem depending on the quality and age of the carpet. But that is to be expected. The best way to take of your carpet is to have a pro in at least once a year. I purchased a steam cleaner to take care of trouble spots and spills and heavy traffic areas. It really helps in between the professional cleanings.

If you're considering professional carpet cleaning, a couple of things to keep in mind,
1 - don't go for just the lowest price. like in all things quality costs.
2 - make sure they use a truck mount steam cleaning system. Truck mounts have a minimum of 5 times the cleaning power of any portable machine. About 10 times the cleaning power of a rental, or home machine.
3 - make sure the have a rotary cleaner. For deep cleaning there is nothing better.
4 - make sure they are IICRC certified. Training and certification makes a huge difference in ability. www.IICRC.org to find a certified company near you.

I have had my carpets cleaned by "Pros" several times and have also rented the rug doctor at Safeway. If you take your time I think you get get just as good a job (if not better) than a pro. You can spend the necessary time on stains and buy scotch guard for the carpet to prevent future stains. All this will cost approx 1/4 of a pro's cost.

If you have a lot of furniture to move around then yes it's worth it, if not then I say do it yourself. There are many products available that will help remove those stains that you can buy at department stores. I personally always clean my own carpets, but I have plenty of help with moving the furniture.

We have a company called Chem-dry in Tennessee. It looks better and stays cleaner longer than steam cleaning with water. Yes, it's well worth it.
