In theory, a more qualitative subject matter will get a bachelor of arts, while a more quantitative major will earn a bachelor of science, but in reality, it is pretty arbitrary. I have a bachelor of science degree in hotel and restaurant management - go figure! Also, many schools give a BBA (bachelor of business administration) for a business degree, not a BA OR a BS.

By the way, there is no truth to the fact that it has anything to do with accreditation, and liberal arts include the natural and physical sciences, according to most definitions, so it is patently false that this has anything to do with being accredited only for arts!

The more science and math you take determines either a BS or a BA.
