First many of them were tombs for kings and Queens , or famous knights . So kings and other royals gave a lot to get in so to speak. Second they were the hub of city live at that time. No theaters or other entertainment just the church. So they made it a place you would want to go.

Because the religions had absolute power and required the population to give them ten per cent of their earnings each year.
Even the very poor had to pay this so the religions had vast wealth.
When you look at these wonderful buildings think of the poverty the ordinary people had to suffer.
The ruling classes were persuaded that if they built these cathedrals they would be sure of a place in heaven

The segment of society with the most power gets to have the tallest buildings. Then it was the Church, now it's big business.

They were thought of as temples to God and everyone gave a good chunk of their wealth to the Church.
