Sometimes, these people are able to turn professional and skate with a touring company like Disney or one of the others. In other cases, these former stars will work as coaches at skating clubs, or as jounalists and sportscasters in the sport. There are also cases where former skaters have gone into other professions outside the sport, such as acting ( in Hollywood or on Broadway) or even medicine, like skater Debi Thomas did. ( Dr. Thomas now has a practice in California, not far from Stanford University, where she went to school.) Being a former skating star is not always a bad thing- these people will usually have a reasonable future once they either age out of the sport or end up retiring because of injuries. Hope this helps.

They tour with the "Disney Stars on Ice" program! Or some other tour like that. It gives them a chance to earn some money to put away during the lean times while they are training for the next big competition.

It has changed over the years, I'm not sure of the specifics but it used to be if they competed professionally they couldn't be in the Olympics but they changed something about that. (I think the folks that compete in the Olympics realize they are competing in the like top 100th of 1% of people who are good at their sport and they can win or loose by a teeny margin and I think they psyche up for it maybe ??
