Why does the surface beneath the paper affect the way writing looks?

When I write on a hard surface it doesn't look good, while writing on a stack of paper, like in a notebook it looks darker and neater...

Picture your pen as a steel wheel. Will it roll smoother on carpet or on cement? On cement, very little of the wheel contacts the cement. On carpet, much more of the wheel contacts the carpet.
