I live in NJ and when they go out of business there painted black for some reason.

It's not so much that they want them to be black. It's that a shut down business location is bad for marketing, so they want to paint out any logos or trademark style or color schemes.

To make it spoooooky
New Jersey has a rich history of spooky old abandoned buildings, like the Edison Museum.

A lot of times the Petroleum companies will do this to get their name and corporate colors off closed stations.

I see out of business painted white, rarely ever black.
