My boyfriend says that you MUST do this otherwise the oven turns off (all ovens, not just his). I've never heard of this before???

well since I build & test cooking appliances for a living, I can tell you that a properly functioning unit will NOT turn off during closed door broiling. If his does it should be checked by a service tech, this actually sounds like malfunctioning temperature sensor. There is a broil stop position built into the door hinge as most broiling is commonly done with the oven door "cracked a bit".
It is perfectly acceptable to leave door closed though

That's not right. There's something wrong with his oven. If it's a gas oven get someone out there to look at it before using it again and keep a few windows open so gas has somewhere to go just in case. If it's electric, no big worry, just have it repaired.

I've never heard that. I broil all the time with the door closed on my GE gas oven.

I don't know if it will turn your oven off, but you are supposed to leave it open while broiling

Yes... you have to turn the oven on before you put the meat in.
