I think you should get a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle if you can... they are very cool....

Many people really like the Mud and Musk Turtles, Box Turtles are good if you are willing to set things up right. Greek or Hermann's Tortoises, Wood Turtles, Leaf Turtles... lots of options!

Sidenecks are really cute if you want water turtles. If you are looking for land turtles / tortoises and have room for an out door pen I'd say red foots. They are sooo sweet.
