My tape is stuck in the VCR and it won't pop back out when I press the eject button. How can I get my tape back out without ruining the VCR and my tape?

Step 1 - unplug your VCR

Step 2 - take off top cover

Step 3 - on the eject mechanism (where the tape goes in and out) find the gearing assembly

Step 4 - turn the 'top' gear one way or the other (you will know which way to turn...it will only turn one way freely)

Step 5 - watch the tape slowly come out of the machine

You will be manually ejecting the tape by doing this. You will get your tape out without destroying tape or VCR.

When you have the tape in your hand....put the cover back on and then plug in the VCR....it will then reset itself.

In the 30 or so years that VCRs have been in use, this has happened quite a few times.

1. Step one. Unplug your VCR for a few minutes and then plug it back in. If your lucky the problem is that it's little computer chip has gotten confused and cutting its power will let it reset itself.

2. Step two. If step one didn't work you will need to find a mechanically inclined person to take the cover off the VCR and manually cycle the tape mechanism. There are several web sites that give instructions for doing this.
