A flip-flop is a sandal with no back. It can be a thong-type sandal or not, but it can't have any back strap.

A flip flop is a rubber thong type sandal with no back strap and a flat sole. Because it's only "anchored" between your big and second toes, the back part of the sandal makes a heckuva racket when you walk, hence the name "flip flop".
When I was a kid, we used to call them "zoris". I have absolutely no idea why!

Sandals have a back. Flip flops are both the thong type and the strap type.

In my day flip flops were sandals with a piece that goes between the toes and when you walk it makes a flip flop sound.

This is how I classify sandals. Teva sandals as "Sport Sandals" and I classify flip flops whether they are thong style of not. I have 3 pairs of flip flops myself.
