Yes lower gears (higher #) will accel faster or act like you have more torque. 3.23 is a good gear and better than a 2.73 for sure but I'm I was going through all the trouble and price of a gear or rear swap, I would go with a 3.42 ratio. IMHO the 3.42 is the best all around performance gear for a street type car If you want a cheaper, quicker swap, look into replacing the whole rear axle housing. Junkyards sells the rear ends for $75 to 150 bucks Alot of the 2.8L v6 cars (camaros and firebirds) came with 3.42 gears stock so you could get a rear from one of those cars and just swap the whole thing under yours. Be sure to check the RPO codes in the consol and also the tooth count on gears before buying a whole rear, just so you know its the ratio you want

This sounds like a fun car. You have to ask yourself what you want out of the car and how much to spend.
The higher the gear the more jump you get at take off, but has crappy fuel milage on the hyway.
What I would do in your case is ask around at cruise nights, car shows etc, get on some forums and find out what the hyway rpms are with what gears. All my cars have a high rear gear because I find that is what I like and I don't take them on the hyway that often.
Good luck.

A lot of your trouble lighting those tires is based in that piece of poop 700 R4 trans. Depending on you financial status I would begin my modifications to it after putting about 3.53 rear gears in. Next would be a change of tranny to a built 350 with a medium stall speed convertor. Let that mildly massaged small block windup a little.

3.42 or 3.55 gears would be a pretty good compromise between off line power and economy. You'll have to change the speedo gears in the trans to acomodate the altered gear ratio and make the speedo accurate.
