I use a blend,but if I think a big word is most appropriate I still usually accompany it with a simpler and roughly synonymous term,albeit at the risk of redundancy. I don't want to make anyone feel inferior. So you might say,why use the big one at all? Generally because - at least for those who know the word - it's somewhat more evocative or three-dimensional and conveys a somewhat more precise idea of what I'm talking about.

And it all depends on to whom I'm
conversing and their vocabulary
skills. One has to be versatile.

I don't like to sound grandiloquent when I engage in conversation, so I try to limit my vocabulary to as little words as possible.
