This goes for both cons and libs. Is it common to elect officials who so blindly vote on life and death issues?

Maybe if they didn't comply, they'd find out why Bush is so persistent about keeping wiretapping here in the US.

Because they went blindly with him, at the time they all believed that Iraq was a threat, even Hilliary. Now when things go wrong they do the natural thing for people in power, they throw the dirt on somebody else and blame him.

Your assumptions are in error. The people in Congress did do their homework. They knew exactly what they were voting for and why they voted for it.
No one "blindly" voted for anything. Politicians prove they have something to offer to their constituents, or they don't get voted in.
If you say elected officials made mistakes, you are also saying voters made mistakes. You will never convince anyone of that.
