In canada you have to give them a SIN (social insurance number) within 3 days of being hired.

So yes, you can be fired if you dont have a number to give them.

You should have already had your SSN before you started looking for a job.

Yes they can let you work while you are waiting but it shouldn't take very long. Most people get them at birth the last 20-30 years so all workers have them before the first job.
If you are a foreigner I don't know the rules on getting a number or how long it takes but maybe ask your foreign consulate to check on you SS number for you.

Disregard all answers that refer to states, social "security" numbers, or the EEOC. These answers apply to the U.S., which does not use the term "social insurance". Because you use the term "social insurance number", you must be in a different country. Indicate which, so that we can answer correctly.

Employers are required to have a social security number for taxes, background checks and legal reasons. If you don't provide it to them, they shouldn't let you work. The fact they were letting you work without a social security number, they can get in trouble.

I would say you don't have a case, unless there is something else to your story.

You can sue for anything, but with what you wrote, you would have a very very weak case.

You also don't say what state you are in. In many states, employment is "at will" so they don't need a reason to fire you.
