I owe $103.33 for loosing a textbook i left on the school bus, I called the bus company 6 times, wrote several emails to Deans, the Principal and the Super Intendent if they had any information about the whereabouts of my book, I checked the lost and found every day for 3 and a half weeks, and ate no lunch to save enough to pay off my debt for 5 or 6 days, after saving 25 dollars my mom stole half of it, the rest i spent while I went with my friend somewhere, now I have a 0 dollar balance and I dont know how to pay this 103 dollars without not eating lunch, i told my parents i owed 20 dollars and even then they tell me to look for the book, if i told them the true story they would probably slap me then never pay it until the bill came to pay it. Then they would shout and hit me again and keep telling me to look for it. What can i do to pay this debt without getting beaten or starving myself? Can someone please help me. Please.

If you lost a $100 bill, you'd just be out the money. This isn't any different, the school shouldn't have to pay for your absent-mindedness. You maybe could negotiate it down a little, but don't count on it.

My best suggestion is to get a job. In the big scheme of things, $100 is very little especially once you have a decent job. I've lost thousands of dollars to more ridiculous things.

We live in a culture that has come to accept debt accumulation as normal. Debt is not normal. We aren't born with debt and there are very few reasons why we should ever go into debt. Remember to look for value in an education, not just price, but the value you are receiving. If you've already made your choice do your best to pay off the debt as quickly as possible.

Go and see the school counselor and explain what has happened. I work as a school counselor and they should be able to help you to get this fine cancelled. Talk to them about getting some assistance for education costs if this family crap is an ongoing problem. Counsellors can help with finance and food aid once they are aware of problems. Good luck.

I feel for you =( though part of your story doesn't ring right with me. Explain your situation to the School, tell them you are getting a Part-time job and will pay it as soon as you get your first pay check and then do it.

Go tell the principal of the school exactly what you've told us here. Word for word.

Perhaps if you are that afraid of physical response from your parents, you should speak to a counselor about it.
