I have a personal space that I only allow those that I want in it to enter. Other people must, at least, be an arms length away from me.

Neither, I just don't much like most people; even people who I know share a commitment or interest with me, probably I wouldn't have much in common with, outside of that commitment or interest.

So, I am around people as long as necessary to perform whatever function is required by work or an activity for my commitments or interests, but other than that; I prefer to be alone with my animals.

And to be totally honest, I don't think these others feel any more loss when I leave than I do.

I find it easy to be friends, but not ever more than that. Yes, it is to protect my feelings and my heart. Nobody likes being hurt and like it even less when the hurt is done on purpose for a long time.

Yes, I keep many people at a distance because I was sexually, physically and emotionally abused, by both male and female perpetrators in childhood. I only allow small children to be right up "in my face", so to speak. I feel so much freer to love children and kitties.

yes it because i am protecting my self.. to get close means sooner or later i will lose them.. and that pain is just too much.. i come from being in Vietnam.. i lost my best Friends. my pals that i went thought boot camp with and drank with. i lost too many and now i just don't want to face the hurt and pain of it so i keep every one at a distance.. the only one i don't is my wife.. she would not let me do that she saved me from a lonely life.

Yes. My experiences have led me to believe that it's necessary not to open up to anybody in order to look out for myself. Every time I have done it in the past I've regretted it.
