knuckle heads are cast iron with an aluminum cover on the push rod side of the head.
pan-heads are aluminum with a chrome pan covering the entire top of the head, they are prone to crack if they get too hot too many times.
shovel heads have the center of the head exposed to the air & have a u shaped cover over the valves & rocker arms(shaped like the handle of a scoop shovel) & have bigger valves & ports than any harley made before or since them
all are true hemi's but the lower ends have changed over the years, types of main bearings, generator to alternator, oil pumps etc.but they can be interchanged to a degree. shovel upper on pan lower for example. I,ve seen one with a knuckle head on the rear cyl. & a pan head on the front mounted on a shovel lower end it ran but it had a special cam & different pistons to make both heads work. old harley parts are never thrown away unless they are destroyed in a wreck or fire, they are used on different bikes over & over. theres some real frankinstein bikes out there running up & down the hiways. if your lucky you wont buy one by accident.some of those old time wrench'es had a real sense of humor & no money for new parts.

The most major difference is the valve train.
Knuckles (1936-1947) were Harley's first true Over Head Valve (OHV) engine. The rocker arms were pivoted off a shaft mounted in the rocker cover.
Pans were next (1948-1965). Their rocker assembly was mounted to "towers" atop the heads, then a cover (pan) was fitted over them, not unlike a 60's-70's small block Chevy engine. Also, the last year of the Pan (1965) was the first year Harley's had electric start.
Shovelheads went back to mounting the rocker shafts to the valve covers.
Also, during the Shovelhead era, the charging system was changed from a generator to an alternator.

Just because you ride a motorcycle, does not mean your a biker. Both bikers and motorcyclist can be idiot riders. But over all bikers have less respect for traffic regulations, not more. As far as other traffic participants, lol, yeah right. So no, it's not true. Unfortunately some words in the English language, evolve over the years. As well as other things. Calling a biker a motorcyclist, can be an insult. A biker is a patch holder in a club, 1% or non 1%. A prospect in a club, or a hang around. There are also lone bikers, who could join a club, but they just don't want to. A motorcyclist, is everyone else. Thanks to the company and others. Motorcyclists have adopted some of the mannerisms of bikers, as well as the term biker.

It's best not to know the difference, lest you join the ranks of all the other mouth breathing, Harley riding, red blooded 'Mericans who will finance a motorcycle worth twice as much as their double wide but can't make their child support payments. Just take a glance at the flagrant abuse of language and grammar in these posts and you'll see what I mean.

Its rocker cover shape/style. Dont know what the latest ones are called (modified shovel?)
I guess the V-rod is a 'bubble head' ( its water cooled)
Randy c gives simplest explanation.
BIGRICKY doesn't have a clue.
You need experience of lots of other bikes before you make stupid statements like that.

the biggest diiference is the rocker cover ( located on top of the cylinder). They get there name because a pan head looks like an upside down pan, a shovel head l ooks like an upside down shovel blade and a knuckle looks similar to a knuckle bone. It's that simple.

Just describes the kind of head it takes to actually buy a Harley when you could buy a real motorcycle, not just a vulgar antique, for alot less.
