Politicians, more often than not, sell themselves to corporations that would rather not have expenses attributable to pollution control. Corporations, by their nature, are greedy and wish to maximize profits.
A scientist who is found to be lying would have zero credibility within his/her profession.
It's pretty obvious who would benefit from lying.
