I don't think he was necessarily lovable, but he was my favorite character. He was the most interesting and complex character in the story, so unjustifiably evil for much of the book, but always clearly with hidden motives. I was upset when he died in the 7th book, but I was also pretty sure that he was going to die before I read it. I wish he could have lived through the whole story, but it seemed like his time to go, if he was going to die. It was especially sad to see him go once we found out for certain that he was definitely on the good side. I loved the chapter with his memories though. He was such a great character.

Loveable? He was anything but - here was a man who could not get over his obsession with Lily and his hatred of James Potter. He even carried over his feelings in dealing with Harry, unable to separate the boy from the father. That is the height of immaturity - and he was a teacher!

His secret work for Dumbledore and being able to fool Voldemort for so long was admirable, but he was a man utterly flawed, due to his sad childhood and his inability to work past his own selfishness.
