Having watched a game tonight, I'm quickly coming to that conclusion. Even the slightest contact is penalised by the referee. It's sad to see such a great game come to this. There used to be shoulder charges and tussles...now, if a player goes down, the tackler is penalised. It used to be a man's game..now it's a game for wusses.

Funny girl...Sorry but female footballers are still WAY behind the men. They would still be able to cope with the 'touch football' that soccer has become lately though. They wouldn't have lasted 10 minutes in the 50s and 60s....come to think of it...neither would today's male footballers.

Absolutely brilliant point! I have said this a number of times to my friends. I understand that times change and the game has developed somewhat from the 70's and 80's and the likes of the "Souness Challenge" but strength is one of the attributes a player should have to succeed in the game. What good is it if every time you use it you are penalised. This is football not basketball! ie ...A contact sport! The theatrics used by some players don't help the cause either, whatever happened to the days were players were embarassed to go down clutching their faces and crying. Someone has to sort it out!

I agree with you. There has to be a bit more contact allowed than there's now but not like Rugby. (Think that GAA has the good mix in that point.) I don't like to see the boys falling down with only the lightest contact or doing the diving which is even worse.
And all teams have to be judged the same. Don't know what that's like in Premier League but in German Bundesliga there are teams i.e. Bayern Munich being treated different than the smaller teams. They can do things players from other teams would be sent off for without even getting a yellow.
Sometimes they just pretend to be injured for minutes and then when nobody's watching they just get up again and run like before. But you can see when something serious has happened because the player is just lying there waiting for the medics to arrive.
These days it seems like the physical contact has somehow moved from the field to the stands especially in the lower leagues (again I only know about Germany here) and in Italy. And that's one of the things they have to tackle.
Some other things I don't like in football now are
- when one team is 1-0 up two minutes before the end and they make a change or get a free and seem to take hours to complete the action. What's the point in getting a player on for half a minute anyway.
- when the players get penalised for celebraitng their goals. It's ok if it gets too long but why not let them pull their jerseys over their heads even without wearing things underneath. Some time ago in Germany a player celebrated by jumping on one of the fences separating field and stands and on jumping down ripped the finger with his wedding ring off -and he still got a yellow for it.
Or all this arguing wiht the ref when he made a decision along the lines of "I didn't do anything, it was him'.
Skills and technique should always come before tackling but good tackling without hurting your opponent is also a skill and should be valued. It's just those guys who tackle when the ball is already miles away (with the intention to hurt) who destroy the game and provoke the acting by the tackled to get the free. But some exaggerate it a bit.
I don't think mixed teams work out after a certain age because the physical development of boys and girls just becomes too different.
But I like women's football (being a girl and having played myself) becasue it's fairer than men's. The girls just don't act and dive to the extent the boys do. They don't need it. And I'm proud of my German girls who have won the World Cup again some weeks ago.
It will always be the sense of my weekends though, I just love ti too much. Have to get me a sat dish and German PayTV to watch the games of my Reds from Hanover. The liveticker on the internet is ok but it's just not the same as being there.
Being only 25 I obviously don't remember the good old times but I've seen some documentaries about matches from the 50s, 60s and 70s and players were tougher then playing with broken arms etc. But actors have always been there just not as aas there seem to be today.

Football is NOT intended to be a contact sport...look at the rules. There are intended to promote contact with the BALL only, not other players. The greatest skill in football is in retaining possession of the ball and keeping it away from the opposition.
Obviously, it is accepted that in order to win possession in the first place some degree of physical contact is inevitable, but the rules insist that this should be minimal. That is NOT a bad thing...it rightly protects and encourages the most highly skilled players, and negates the cloggers whose only talent is in badly timed tackles.

Yes! It's a game for women, wussies and and chidren. I used to play footie in goal. I never minded if the opposition came in with a decent challenge. I also played rugby for many years. Within both games, I played the games within the rules for the most part. When these guys blatantly cheat at football, or even try to gain some advantage for their club by cheating (I'm thinkimg of Celtic and Italian goalies here) , then footie no longer deserves to be called a sport.

Not to the extent of rugby...but cetainly there a fair amount of jostling and body contact. Yes refrees still have to give the benefit to the player that goes down....but then there's increasing vigilance on players that feign to go down just to get the free kick!

calls are only being called more and more often now cause mainly players are overdoing the contact...the slightest bump and they take the hardest fall possible...and if they dont get the call the player are all over the refs and they argue on and on...so its the refs who have no choice but to make the call
