Hey guys,
Im running a pretty basic dell and I think its really time for an upgrade. I dont want to buy everything new, So I just want to upgrade a few things.

First off I have 1 Gig RAM
3.4 Ghz Processor
Radeon X300 Graphics card

Now im thinking about buying a GeForce 8800GTS 640MB to replace the X300. Would I simply be able to swap the two cards out and add a 2 Gig DDR Ram without changing anything else? Or would I need to change other things for my computer to even work.
Im really planning on running Crysis and UT3(Medium-high settings at best :P)

Thanks guys, these PC questions are always fun arent they?

Im using a Dell Dimension 4700 for the Record. I used that crucial scan and it said I can support up to 4 gigs of Ram.

But how can I tell the best graphics card my computer can hold

Consider just the 8800GTS 320mb or the upcoming 8800GT.

Your old tech processor could nor fully unleash the power of the new high-end cards even if you overclock your processor. You would need a power supply with at least 26 amps on the +12V rail but 30 amps should run cool all day long.

2x1Gb RAM in dual channel mode should be optimum. Anything more tends to be unnecessary expense.

I would just add 1 gig of ram and swap cards. Anything past 2 gig is a waste of money, you won't see any gain. you can refer to Maximum PC's October 07 issue, they built the ultimate pc, best of the best, and only 2 gig ram. For that reason. Now they did have a 1333 fsb, and tweaked everything up, but still, more than 2 is a waste. Enjoy the 8800gts, those rock for the money.

Well 1st thing is what model Dell do you have it might only be able to handle 1gb of memory. Go to www.crucial.com and let their scanner scan your system to tell you what type and what the max your motherboard will handle. Then I would look into going more if you can. THe you have to make sure your mobo has a PCIe slot for that video card but since the X300 is PCIe it probably does but will the PSU support a 5x bigger card. I would go with the memory 1st and see how the computer responds then. Then maybe go upto a 256mb for under $100 all day long...THanks
