IF organic food are :
"...produced according to certain production standards. For crops, it means they were grown without the use of conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers, human waste, or sewage sludge, and that they were processed without ionizing radiation or food additives"... then I would have to say YES, in the 90's and well into the 21st century when Cuba was cut of support of its major creditor Soviet Union, they had to "switch" to more conventional ways of producing the food they produce , they hardly get any pesticides nor fertilizers so the food must be called then organic , but it has not been by choice but by force. I could easilly tell the difference, when I went in May the products did nt have half the size of the ones in here in USA, but they tasted really goooood! Fruits were sweeter. Well they have always been...
It looks to me that some people who answered the quetion No , do not really know the meaning of the concept...

During the "special period", Cuba could not afford to buy much in the way of artificial fertilisers, so much of its agriculture was organic by necessity.
However, I am sure that it is not true that is was all organic.
Although the Cuban government likes to proclaim its organic credentials, I think that it is now importing more fertilizer.

Your friend has never been to Cuba has he/she.
Cuba is a beautiful place and the plants are just like any other plant in that area of the world.
Most of the people are not well off enough to afford to do organic agriculture, the Communist government may have some but the general public has normal gardens like we do. They grow vegetables and fruits to feed their families and have flower gardens.

It seems that your friend is quite familiar with guano. As to the organic part, how would he know? I would ask for the source of his information. If he answers that Michael Moore said it, then he certain smells.
Mr. M. on "organic."
