The earth circles around the sun for one reason only: gravity. The sun, since it is so large, has a huge mass, which leads to a huge gravitational field. Gravity is the attraction between particles, and the more particles in an object, the greater the attraction that is given off.
Aslo, since the Earth was moving continuously, it goes just fast enough not to get too close to the sun, but slow enough so it doesnt fly off into space. The gravity of the sun is allowing this to happen.

The Earth and all the mater in our solar system was born from the Sun. The Sun was born when a cloud of gas and elementary particles began to pool together and as it got larger gravity molded it together to form our Sun. The matter left over became the planets and the rest of the solar system. The Sun is many many times larger that even the largest planet Jupiter. The Earth is like a pebble along side a bolder in relation to the size of the Sun. It would take hundreds or perhaps thousands of Earths to fill up the Sun.
The Sun itself is tiny compared to some of the other stars that we know about. See how big our sun is compared to one star in the constellation Orion....

Were there no gravity, the earth would move in a straight line tangent to its orbit. The gravitational pull of the sun pulls the earth off that straight line back toward the sun, restoring the earth to its orbit.

Gravity is pulling the earth toward the sun. Centrifugal force keeps it from crashing into it. The result is that earth keeps traveling in an orbit around the sun.

Gravity is a mysterious force but that's why it circles the sun. :-)
