I'm going to be in a small space because we're moving back to NY, so I'm thinking of getting a travel play yard instead of a set of furniture. It worked well for my brother in law...has anyone done this?

a crib is not a lot bigger then a pack n play... and i think a crib mattress is a lot more comfortable! the play yard mats are sooo thin, and kinda hard. i would recomemd just getting the crib, you don't need an entire furniture set...

I'd never heard of such a thing until my friend got one, but there is such a thing as a "mini crib." They have the multiple level and real mattress features just like a "real" crib, but are much smaller. Here are links to a couple:

We've used our play yard as a portable crib when we're in a hotel and have never had any problems, the safety rail is the same height as a crib, neither of our kids every escaped from either.

Before my son was born we bought a Play Yard for our son. My son didn't like to sleep in it, so we ended up using his bouncy seat, or his swing to sleep in. When he was about 4 or 5 months old we bought him a crib and he has slept in the crib ever since. We have used his Playpen on rare occasions for my son to sleep in(gram-mom's house). We do use his playpen for a toy box now. He is 17 months old now.

we've a Graco p.c.. and Play with bassinet. for my section, it isn't a alternative for a crib. i wager it would properly be a alternative for a bassinet, although that is style of wide. Our son certainly napped contained in the bassinet section at the same time as he turned right into a newborn and on hard nights might want to finally end up napping there (we save it interior the front room) with me on the settee now and again. To me, that isn't any longer extremely smooth sufficient to be an finished-time crib. We use it at the same time as vacationing or on some events at the same time as friends with toddlers have visited us and we've had our son sleep in it in our room and given their toddlers his room. the significant benefit to that is that it folds up right into a neat kit noticeably extremely. We save it interior the front room and that i stick my son in there at the same time as i pick to snatch laundry or answer the door or something like that. And that is the position we toss toys that are contained in the technique the floor. I do recommend having one, yet no longer as a alternative for a crib.

we have a crib our baby's room, a play yard for travel. If you have limited space, i would suggest the play yard...it works just as well as the crib and doesn't take up as much room.

I co-sleep and with a crib as a sidecar.

But you should know that SIDS experts say not to let your baby sleep in a play-yard.
