We are both from the midwest and neither of us have ever lived in a city bigger than Kansas City. (We lived in the outskirts.) We are both educated professionals with no kids. We have to live somewhere clean and safe, where is that? We make about 115k/year between us, and that is in a smaller college town, so we will probably make slightly more in Vegas. We are both programmers, so does that limit us to working in a certain part of town? Any help or links you can provide would be awesome!!

I moved to Las Vegas from St. Louis 4 years ago.

Housing here is double to triple what it is in suburban K.C. It is starting to get a little better and becoming much more of a buyers market than it was when we purchased our house.

If you haven't already, you should have no problem finding work as programmers or IT in general. You should not be limited to work in any given part of town.

There is a lot of new construction here - houses, towne houses and condominiums - in almost every area of the valley. Very clean. Make sure you have your realtor check to see if there are any lawsuits filed against the builder of the place you want to purchase, regardless of whether or not the lawsuits involves housing in the area where you are interested in purchasing . If so, find another builder. A lot of these places went up so fast that there are many instances of substandard construction.

Look the farther away from the strip the better. Henderson and Summerlin are good locations. The South west part of the valley is building up now and a great location. Look on craigslist for Las Vegas for job openings in your area of expertise. That will give you an idea of what is going on here. I moved here from Ohio and I just love the weather here. Hate the traffic. Speed limits and stop signals seem like suggestions to drivers in Vegas.

The best places to live here are Summerlin and Henderson. The majority of Henderson is clean and safe with the exeption of near downtown/Boulder Highway area.
