It depends on who you ask. Though most conservatives support trade with China there is still some level of distrust, especially with China's often tacit support of U.S. policy in Asia. If your interested, Duncan Hunter, republican presidential candidate, is very passionate about this issue, and he discusses it at some length on his website.

I choose foe.... However, we need them because they have all the materials for making our stuff. They are communists, which, nobody likes. I feel bad for the chinese people though... they have to work long hours and then come home to their 3 children and then they have to abandon their 3rd one because the government only allows two... not only that, but since they are only allowed 2 kids, they have to get rid of the girl one so that when a boy baby comes, they could carry on their families name. That must suck. And on top of that, they lose their job because theres so much lead in the products they make! China is one messed up place! No offence or anything, but really it seems pretty bad there. Also, I am a conservative, and I say that we should cut off trade and make our own stuff. Think about it, if we make our own stuff, the american economy would boom like crazy and people would buy our stuff... and since there are illegal aliens here, they could have those jobs and the whole, "Mexicans stole my job." thing would be over. Not only that, but I bet in time, China would then convert to democratic government, treat their people as such, and make their products a bit less flimsy.

Dont be so quick to claim that all conservatives support the high level of trade with China. What many conservatives will say is that union extortion of US based industry helps push them to look elsewhere for labor. US Toyota pays its workers an average of $46/hr including benefits and taxes while the entrenched auto unions at the big three cost them over $76/hr at Chrysler and more at Ford and GM. Of course the big three are hurting for money yet two have seen recent strikes- looking out for workers is one thing, greed is another

China is a foe .Red China tries to steal our military
technology and other technologies which are the
intellectual property of the United States .We need to
enlarge our manufacturing base ,and we can do that
by raising our tariffs on Chinese goods coming into the
United States .We can give tax breaks to companies
that manufacture here .Call me a protectionist .I really
don't care !!!!

I think it will be great when China starts spending money on products made by legal American citizens. The idea of global economy will show us the rewards of having put so much money into China when that happens.
