Because they get so wrapped up and blinded from all of the good things they have and take that for granted, and when they lose it, they realize how good they had it, and want to be a better person. Good question, have a star..

I'm inclined to say that the only reason you hear about such rags-to-riches stories is because they are so uncommon. The truth of the matter is that it's harder to lose everything you have, and fall from the heights of social grace and power, than it is to be born poor or lose what little you have and then go on to succeed. The guy who loses his wife and kids and then his job, only to then end up in prison, doesn't make for that uplifting of a story, but I dare say that's far more common a scenario than the guy who loses all that and then becomes President of some large institution or a Nobel prize winner.

Some people take for granted what they have but when they lose all of it that wakes them up and they realize things don't last forever if u put no effort into keeping them, so after they lose everything then what they gain back they take better care of

Losing everything puts things in perspective for that person. It gives them a viewpoint they never had before.
That is the bases for "tough love" which is to not keep bailing a person out of whatever trouble they are in. Otherwise they will keep doing the same thing over and over again because they don't have to "fix" it for themselves.

Yes, I know what you mean. But most people think that they'll always get another chance from a higher source or from that significant person in their life will take care of everything for them. (Be it family, bf/gf, friend, children or spouse). Because they take it for granted that things will be provided for them.
When that chance doesn't come, it's like a big kick in the pants to realize that it's up to themself to succeed and that no one else can make the choices for them. It's all or nothing...

That is one of those silly question people ask cause they want sound smart. A person who loses everything HAS to do somthing productive becuase they have LOST EVERYTHING. Get it ? they have nothing so anything they do is productive. If your life is good then why change it??

because, we are not born with common sense. you have to experience something in order to decide how you feel about it. and thing dont always register with us right away. some things have to affect us greatly, for us to make a great change. and most of the times, situations have to get worse before they get better.
