It doesn't. Examples: Spaniard, Pole, Swede, Briton, Finn, Philippino, Israeli, Chinese
Respective countries: Spain, Poland, Sweden, Britain, Finland, The Philippines, Israel, China

There are also a couple down there that are thinking about adjectives, not nouns. Tut tut.

It is an excellent question and I do not know the answer either.

No all nationalities end Wit an. There are Portuguese, Israelis, and Spaniards.

Well it doesnt end with'an' it ends with 'n'.@ first its America but then you add 'n' so it will be America+n=American!See!I still dont know why it ends that way though,sorry.Oh, by the way "Dave's gran" when she said your not smart she was actually talking about herself!:D

Not all nationalities end with 'an' - example: English,Welsh, Irish, Scottish/Scots - I think those that do end 'an' are generally countries with vowel endings - America, Canada, Bulgaria etc etc

I think it's all countries that end in a vowel that end in 'an'. When you think about it, it's just the 'n' that's been added.
