Or do you - like me - just shake your head in wonder at what finely brought up and educated people we're producing these days?

That is the difference between reality and symbol, For every Liberal who would burn the flag if it meant saving the Constitution, there are a hundred GOP who would happily burn the Constitution to save the flag.

The comment above me, refering to the asker as an atheist communist, it pretty much just backs the point of the asker.

We are pretty much witnessing a dark age coming on.

Atheism is the belief that there are no gods. It has nothing to do with the economic systems that Soviet Russia had or with the economic system that China had previous, its obvious to me they are now a capitalist growing nation.

Insulting liberals as godless when many are religious, insulting liberals as communist or socialist is just so ignorant of the definitions of liberal, communist, and socialist.

Is the Constitution more important than the flag?

There is a flag burning amendment. It reads as follows:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

----

We desire defense of the constitution, and of course, the nation as a whole.

In battle the flag we would defend, but not at the expense of a solider on our side.

We liberals pledge alligance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivincible, with liberty and justice for all.

Some liberals do speak the words under god. I however do not.

We will protect the right to do so, those of us who are mainstream liberals.

The extreme will try to remove the word god from our pledge or from our currency. The majority of us do not wish to have such petty battles.

There are senior citizens who currently cut their perscription medication in half, to stretch out the life of the bottle, because the cost to refill is high.

We have children who will go to school Monday morning whose schools are falling apart, and whose textbooks are antiquated.

We have a President who is borrowing money from Russia and China to spend to fund an Occuppation of Iraq.

Where is the exit strategy?

There are 12 million illegal immigrants in this country. They work and do not pay social security or medicare tax on their under the table income. They go to the emergency rooms and are given medical care at taxpayer expense.

Am I for amnesty? I am for admiting the truth, this country is taking in the tired and the poor who want to come here.

Why are we waiting to sign them up as citizens? Because they don't speak English and some redneck has his panties in a britch because of this?

The motto of the United States is in Latin, it is on our money on the one dollar bill is it not?

Can we stop the hypocrisy?

Can we start as a nation on the right foot?

Could we fix America's problems?

Can we admit there are people here illegally and that they are working and we need to address this by inviting them to citizenship -
and what would this test be exactly?

Would it be questions like what year was the Declaration founded?

What are the colors of the flag?

How foolish these tests when natural born citizens are unable to identify the United States on a flag.

Do I think the Constitution is more important than the flag?

Yes.

I joined the United States Coast Guard at the age of 23 and pledged to defend the Constitution of the United States.

When I took the oath there was a flag of the United States in the room.

We took a pledge on that day to that flag.

Burn the flag some do. Why do we pay so much attention to it?

Why?

Its a wedge issue.

Republicans are using the wedge issue to get elected.

This is their motto . .

liberals are bad
we are pro life
if you elect the liberals they will make gay orgies legal

Then they introduce the flag burning amendment. Of course it doesn't pass.

And Democrats up for reelection vote against it.

And the Republicans back home then get up on their TV commecial and say "Democrat so and so voted against the flag burning amendment".

While the foolish take to the polls to vote based on these wedge issues, most mainstream Americans do not.

There are decent conservatives who vote Republican for the right reasons, and decent liberals who vote Democrat for the right reasons.

All I can hope for as a citizen is that my government will do the right thing for me and that those in government will elevate the national discourse.

If you watched West Wing season six and seven you saw two candidates for President who did this.

I do not expect this to happen in 2008. I expect a repeat of the last two elections, with the wedge issues.

I'm thinking that psuedo-patriotic numbskull far-rightists do a better job of desecrating the flag by leaving it wind-tattered on their gas-guzzling vehicles along with those cheesy flag bumper-stickers with partisan political statements.

No, like you, I don't look up to the flag and I hate and poke fun at other people's beliefs (especially those dumb God followers). That makes me look and feel important and big. You've taught me well.

I'm a fellow commie.. er, well you know.

No, just the fact they actually think we are stupid enough to fall for their lies. Flag waving lies are still lies.
