Having children really speeds the "growing up" process. After I had my daughter (when I was 20) I really matured in a lot of ways. Suddenly, I was responsible for this tiny little human being, who was totally dependent on me. But thinking back, I guess the first time I can remember feeling mature was when I was in the hospital for a time when I was 16. I had an elderly lady for a room mate, and she was having a hard time dealing with her illness. I remember when I started to feel better myself, I would go over and sit by her bed and talk to her and sometimes hold her hand, and sometimes read to her. I really felt like I was doing a good and grownup thing, and it made me feel really good. We formed a special bond in that short amount of time. I like to think I made her stay a little more bearable. (I'm not really a senior citizen, by the way. I'm 47, but I like the senior's section. There are a lot of nice people here!) Don't worry, I still feel like a child sometimes, too!

This may sound awful...but it was after my mother died, she was 74. While she was alive, everything I did, I questioned myself "what would Mama think"? Only after she died, did I feel like an adult. I was 39, had been married for 20 years and had two sons...Mama could still make me doubt my abilities as a mature adult. For some reason, my Daddy never made me feel that way...today, I'm 53, Daddy is 91. Now the maturity comes with being a "parent" to my Daddy. I think a lot of us have had that flip flop in roles. It's a tough one.

For me it was when I got very sick and had to be hospitalized for a month and then I had to go into a Health and Rehabilitation Center for three months !!! I realized almost from the beginning of that hellish time that when it came down to the real nitty gritty I had nobody I could really depend on other than myself !!!!! I had plenty of support but I have never felt so alone in my life !!!!! I was 50 years old !!!!!!! That's when I grew up !!!!

I knew I had entered the adult world and passed from childhood when my first child was born 10 days after my 20th birthday.

I was 13 years old and wearing my first bra. I stuffed it with paper to make it fit better when my girlfriend asked me to accompany her family to the airport for a pick-up.
She assured me the stuffed bra looked great! That day I paraded around the airport, shoulders back, and thought I was a complete woman, Miss America even! ! It only lasted a couple of hours and I was back in the neighborhood being "Judy Lee."
Funny the things a girl recollects!

I have moments or periods in time where I feel like an adult......unfortunately it never feels like a permanent state. There's always something comming along where it's all new to me and I don't have a clue what's going on.

The first time I realized that I no longer needed my dad's approval (not permission, but his agreement with me) for something I had decided to do. I was proud of myself because it involved getting a job where I faced quite a bit of competition. My dad, was not supportive intially, because he worried about me. That was the moment.....I could still be proud of myself even when my dad didn't understand or agree with my choice....initially....he got over it. I was 25 years old.

Getting my first real job with a regular paycheck, then paying my own way. I was 18, then had my son at 20, that made me grow up fpr sure.
