Why is a silver sixpence considered lucky? I know of traditions like a bride having one in her left shoe, but why are these coins lucky?

Yes, but it's not JUST considered lucky in marriage, it's considered lucky generally.

Well, it's part of the rhyme: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe. It is to bring wealth to the new couple in their marriage.

Congratulations!!! It sounds like you are putting a lot of thought into this. I used a sixpence (30 yrs ago) . I still have it. I got it from a nice jewelry shop. You might call a few of those if you need to find one. I've never heard of using a different coin, but why not...especially if you can't find a sixpence. Have a wonderful wedding and an even better marriage.

I've got sixpence, jolly, jolly sixpence!
I've got sixpence to last me all my life.
I've got sixpence to spend and sixpence to lend
and sixpence to send home to my wife, poor wife.

No cares have I to grieve me. No pretty little girls to deceive me.
I'm happy as a lark, believe me, as we go rolling, rolling home.

I've got fourpence, jolly, jolly fourpence!
I've got fourpence to last me all my life.
I've got fourpence to spend and fourpence to lend
And fourpence to send home to my wife, poor wife.
I've got tuppence, jolly, jolly tuppence!
I've got tuppence to last me all my life.
I've got tuppence to spend and tuppence to lend
And tuppence to send home to my wife, poor wife.
I've got nopence, jolly, jolly nopence,
I've got nopence to last me all my life,
I've got nopence to spend and nopene to lend,
And nopence to send home to my wife, poor wife.
