Hermit crabs have no external differences between the sex (sexual dimorphisism), so it cannot be sexed when in shell.You need to wait when it gets out of its shell.

>>Females have well-developed small legs on on the left side of the abdomen,while in males it is absent or much smaller and not nearly as hairy.
>> The best way of sexing a crab hermit is by locating the gonopores or sexual openings at the base of the second pair of walking legs which are present among females but not in males.

watch it and note what cloakroom it uses!

Females have gonophores on the base of their back pair of walking legs(small holes). You have to wait for them to come right out of their shells.
