Are you painting a picture? That is important, because if you are painting, your imagination can run wild, but if you are planting this picture, a lot of restrictions like weather will come into play.
First, Solomon did not have a hanging gardens in his capital of Jerusalem. But he did cavort with his bride in gardens, recorded in the Old Testament Book known as Song of Solomon, which is a love story.
The hanging gardens which you are thinking of was in Babylon, and I think it probably belonged to King Nebuchadnezzar. The only plant that I can think of right off that would be a definite tree to include would be the Weeping Willow, Salix babylonica, whose name would lead me to believe that it is native to Iraq, where the ruins of Babylon exist today.
If I were to paint the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, I would start with the Song of Solomon and other Bible books because the same plants would live in most Middle Eastern countries. There are some web sites that interpret the Biblical names of plants into their modern scientific names, and those names would help you do a Yahoo! images search for what they look like. Hanging or not hanging is usually listed under "habit" in plant books and websites. Vines and trailing plants usually hang or drape the best over buildings and walls, so look for those types of plants. Some junipers are native to the Middle East, and they can have picturesque shapes, especially when windblown. The true jasmines like Jasminum sambac are native to the far east, but J. sambac is known as Arabian Jasmine, so maybe traders introduced it to the Middle East early? I would also include trailing roses on the walls, since many fragrant roses were native to the Middle East and Asia. But most would have had smaller buttonlike flowers, in great profusion, rather than a few big buxom single roses like the hybrid tea roses of today. An example would be the rose "Ispahan".
Just some ideas...
